The Saree Sahelis will bring a splash of colour to the City to Bay Fun Run next month.
The Saree Sahelis will bring a splash of colour to the City to Bay Fun Run next month.
The group will walk the course wearing traditional Indian attire at the September 17 event in a bid to promote physical health and celebrate cultural diversity in South Australian multicultural communities.
“Saree is a traditional attire, and saree also means ‘all’,” Sonali said. “Sahelis means ‘friends’ and it led us to
‘Saree Sahelis’”.
Sonali said waking together at City-Bay was a powerful visual representation.
“By walking in sarees, the Saree Sahelis hope to break stereotypes, challenge cultural barriers and create a more connected society,
‘Chronic health issues like diabetes and high blood pressure are common in multicultural communities.
“Walking is a simple yet effective way to fight these conditions.”
The group has been walking between 6km and 10km around Adelaide each week to prepare for City-Bay.
“when we walk together, we share what’s going on in our life,” Sonali Said.
More than 100 people have registered to join the Saree Saheli initiative.
Bibs must be collected from the City-Bay Expo at Hindmarsh Square before 12pm Saturday 16th September
