THE countdown to a new era has started for South Australia’s best-loved community event — the City-Bay fun run.

THE countdown has commenced to an exciting new era for South Australia’s best-loved community event — the City-Bay fun run — with a new look and new events — for two legs or four.

When tens of thousands of people lace up their runners for the annual event — now in its 46th year — on September 16, there will be more choice than ever before.

The Westpac City-Bay Fun Run, presented by the Sunday Mail, will also feature a half marathon and 3km dog walk for the first time, adding to the 12km, 6km and 3km distances.

The Sunday Mail retains its role as principal media partner, with Westpac taking on the naming rights in a two-year deal.

The 21.1km route will start at Morphettville Junction Centre at 6.15am, with runners heading towards the city on the southern side of Anzac Hwy before turning around in Adelaide and following the traditional route back to the finish line at Glenelg.

Race director Joe Stevens said he expected it to be the “fastest and flattest half marathon in Australia”.

“We are excited to give eager runners from around Australia the opportunity to best their personal times for the distance,” he said.

The Mix 102.3 3km dog walk will start at The Junction at Camden Park about 10.10am, after all other runners and walkers have crossed the start line.

Participants walking with their furry friends will have their own finishing area and a “dog village” at Brian Nadilo Reserve.

The dog walk will support Guide Dogs SA/NT, with half of the entry fee donated to the local charity.

Mr Stevens said there was a “phenomenal” amount of interest in the new walk for people and pooches.
“We’ve had a fair bit of feedback already … we’re really excited about the number of entries so far,” he said. Westpac state general manager Lester Wynne-Jones said the bank was “thrilled” to continue its support of the fun run, which “celebrates the best of Adelaide’s community spirit”.

“Westpac has a long history of helping Australians and we are thrilled to continue our support of this iconic South Australian event to raise funds and awareness of the important community service provided by our charity partner, Women’s and Children’s Hospital Foundation,” he said.

“We look forward to seeing South Australians join us on the day as we bring entertainment from start to finish, and Westpac volunteers cheer runners on along the way.”

Sunday Mail editor Andrew Holman said in its 45 years, the City-Bay represented so much about the positives of SA — family, fun, fitness, mateship, community and charity.

“This year’s event will represent the start of an exciting new era,’’ he said.

Early bird registrations will be open until July 31. details and sign up at city-bay.org.au
