Katie Costello was just six years old when her world was first turned upside down by cancer, losing her mum, Leanne, to the disease in 2007.
Five years later, her nana, Lorrain, would be diagnosed with breast cancer, leading the then 12-year-old to join Canteen Australia.
Now 22, Ms Costello has competed in the annual City-Bay Fun Run over the past nine years to raise funds for Canteen, in honour of her matriarchs.
“My nana was a big part of my upbringing after my mum’s cancer and passing just after my 6th birthday,” she said.
“She was like a role model to me and often took us to school and stuff because my dad worked.
“My family and I started running the City-Bay in 2015 after my sister found out that Canteen had a team. Since then, we have done it every year.”
This September Ms Costello, who is also a youth ambassador for Canteen, will walk 12km alongside her siblings Emily, 26, Patrick, 19, and dad Dave to raise funds for the charity.
“It’s super important because (Canteen) definitely makes me, and other people I’ve spoken to, feel less alone,” she said. “It’s a fun day.”
This year’s City-Bay Fun Run kicks off on Sunday, September 15, and marks the 50th edition of the race.
