Gawler grandfather and City-Bay legend Warren Gowland, 76, ran in the inaugural Lumary City-Bay Fun Run in 1973 and will return for the first time to walk the 6km race with his family by his side.
After undergoing heart bypass surgery in November, Mr Gowland set a personal goal to “finally make it back to the City-Bay fun run”, inviting his family along for the ride at a family BBQ earlier this year.
Mr Gowland will be joined in the 6km Walk by daughters Sarah Coventry,44, and Belinda Sutcliffe,51, Son-in-law Curtis Sutcliffe,53, and grandchildren Sophie,12, Eddy,10, and Lucy Coventry,6, and Emily Sutcliffe,25.
“I’m totally thrilled to have them come and join me,” Mr Gowland said.
I would have felt pretty lonely out there walking alone by myself at this stage of my life.”
Mr Gowland said the first City-Bay was a “lot of fun” and while he had never run that distance before, he finished in 1951st place.
The City-Bay fun run will take place on Sunday, September 17.
