When Adam Tonko suffered a brain injury five years ago, he couldn’t walk or talk for weeks. but along with his fellow team members, Mr Tomko will lace up his shoes for a cause that cahnged his life and join the 50th running of the Lumary City-Bay Fun Run on September 15.
He will be part of a relay team raising money for Brain Injury SA, which works with and for the acquired brain injury community.
“They helped me so much,” Mr Tomko said.
‘I couldn’t talk, couldn’t walk when I had my brain injury, and my rehab just helped me so much.”
Tens of thousands of runners and walkers are expected to turn out for this year’s City-Bay, supported by the Sunday Mail. They can opt for the classic 12km, as well as 3km, 6km and half marathon distances. the iconic race – SA’s largest community participation event – was launched this week. “This isn’t just any celebration,” race director Joe Stevens said. ‘It’s our golden jubilee where fitness fans and community champions come together to relive 50 years of unforgettable memories.
“Let’s fill the streets with a nostalgic parade of colour, music, excitement and achievement.”
Mr Stevens also hoped to top last year’s monster fundraising achievement of $337,000.
Mr Tomko and his teammates will take off from the 3km mark, walking and running as far as they can in the race, accessible to people from all walks of live, from elite runners to passionate volunteers.
